Finally, Coons and Katz will meet at the same event, giving Delaware voters a chance to see them side by side on October 22.

Delaware’s U.S. Senate race now has a date circled in red ink: Thursday, October 22. Democratic U.S. Sen. Chris Coons and Republican challenger Dr. Mike Katz will appear together at a public candidate forum in Wilmington, hosted by the Rotary Club of Wilmington.

The timing is not subtle. October 22 is also the first day of early voting in Delaware. Election Day follows on Tuesday, November 3. That gives the forum the feel of a final exam with voters already sharpening their pencils.

The forum will put Coons and Katz in the same room.

The event will feature Coons and Katz answering questions in the same setting. Jake Owens, editor-in-chief of Spotlight Delaware, will moderate.

Rotary Club of Wilmington members will ask questions. The club plans to use the same basic format it used last week for a candidate forum with Democratic state treasurer candidate Ted Lauzen and Republican candidate Mike Ramone.

That means it won't be a free-for-all shouting match, even if political junkies might secretly enjoy one. Think less cable-news cage match, more structured civic grilling.

Still, the stakes are real.

For Katz, the forum offers a chance to make his case directly against an incumbent senator. For Coons, it gives him a public chance to defend his record and answer questions after criticism over an earlier debate that never happened.

The earlier debate fight still hangs over the race.

The Coons and Katz Set for a Delaware Senate Forum on October 22 comes after earlier talks about getting both candidates together during the campaign.

University of Delaware student political organizations had tried to organize a bipartisan debate. That effort did not come together. Coons faced backlash after declining that first debate setting, according to the campaign discussion now surrounding the race.

That history matters because debates and forums do something campaign ads cannot. They put candidates side by side. No editing tricks. No glossy mailers. No perfectly chosen photo of someone pretending to inspect a machine part they have never seen before.

Voters get to compare answers in real time.

Early voting raises the pressure.

The forum’s date makes it more than another calendar item.

Because early voting begins the same day, some Delaware voters may hear from Coons and Katz and then cast ballots soon after. That adds pressure on both campaigns to be clear, direct, and prepared.

Issues likely to matter include:

  • The economy and inflation

  • Border security and public safety

  • Federal spending

  • Health care

  • Energy policy

  • The role Delaware should play in Washington over the next six years

The Rotary format may shape how sharp the exchanges become. Since club members submit the questions and the moderator presents them, the forum will likely focus on voter concerns rather than campaign theatrics.

That is good news for anyone tired of political events that feel like two people arguing over a lawn mower at a neighborhood cookout.

What voters should watch for

The biggest question is not whether both candidates show up. It is whether they give clear answers.

Coons will likely need to explain why voters should give him another six years in the Senate. Katz will need to show he can offer more than criticism of the incumbent. That means specifics, not bumper-sticker lines.

Watch for how each candidate handles:

Accountability

Does the candidate answer the actual question, or run out the clock like a football team protecting a lead?

Washington spending

Does either candidate name real priorities, or does the answer stay safely vague?

Public safety and border policy

These remain key issues for many voters, especially those who want federal leaders to take enforcement seriously.

Tone under pressure

A forum can reveal temperament. That matters in a Senate race, where voters are hiring someone for a six-year job.

The takeaway

The October 22 forum gives Delaware voters a useful side-by-side look at Chris Coons and Mike Katz right as early voting begins.

After the failed student-led debate effort, this Rotary Club forum now becomes the main public test so far. Voters should expect fewer fireworks than a televised debate, but the same basic question remains: who makes the stronger case for representing Delaware in the U.S. Senate?
